How do you use a calculator to add/sub/mult/divide in different Bases?

  • I'm doing math homework and I need to figure out how to add, subtract, multiply and divide in different bases... unfortunately I wasn't in class the day my professor was teaching this.

So can someone help me figure out how to input and solve this using a calculator?

    Ex: 204(base 5)
    + 123(base 5)
    ----------------------
    ?

    Ex #2: 43A7(base12)
    - 289(base12)
    -----------------------
    ?

  • Just do the calculations normally, keeping all the operations in the same base. 204b5 + 123b5 = 327b5 = 92 is the same thing as 54 + 38 = 92.

Unless this is some kind of computer science question where you need to get a program to figure this out for you, changing the base of numbers if fairly simple.

  • It depends on the base and on the calculator.

Not all calculators are built with the base-arithmetic feature... and those that are only use decimal (10), hexadecimal (16), octal (8), and binary (2).

Anything else, its best to just do it on paper.

You say you werent in class the day of this lecture. Let me ask you this... what makes you think that your teacher taught the class how to use a calculator? It makes more sense to me that he would have taught the concepts for you to do it on paper yourself. Youre making an assumption that the lecture revolved around calculator function, or youre looking for a lazy quick way of getting your homework done. Dont make assumptions about lecture or math course-work... it will only hinder you. I always find it amusing when math students get introduced to a new concept that cannot be done on a calculator... watch as their world falls apart and they get overwhelmed with something so "unfair"
