Power window troubles with my Ford?

  • 1996 ford explorer sport power window driver side is not working at all although other windows work when I push the drivers side window switch I here a clicking noise. Where and what could be the problem?

  • I posted thiis for another person with a similar problem. It is lehgthy, I hope it helps.

My friend you need the help of an honest and qualified body shop and here`s why. Anytime a side power window fails to go up and down as it is supposed to, the first thing the shade tree mechanics say is you need a motor replaced or your regulator is bad. This is not always the case. You in your question said it was going almost all the way down then with a little help would go on down. This tells you that it is still getting power and the regulator is still working to a point. All that being said, there are a multitude of things that can go wrong with a power window. It could have a broken rivet. A broken spot weld or welds. It could have a pinched weather seal that is bunching up and causing the glass to drag. It could have rust in the teeth of the regulator. It could just need the regulator lubricated. Now I could go on and on with the could be`s. But I bet you have the picture.Body shops deal with these window problems almost daily. So what you need is an honest one, a body shop that`s been around for a while and has built they`re business by maintaining a good reputation. They will not be able to tell you exactly what is wrong until they get the inner door panel off. But, body shops with good reputations won`t rip you off by replacing un-necessary parts. And if they can repair the problem with out replacing a part they generally will. Some of the parts in these electric motor systems are rebuildable and or repairable. Your first priority is making some phone calls to family and friends to locate that reputable body shop that can truste. They will do you a good job at a fair price and hand you a warranty. These people are licensed, insured and bonded in most states.

  • if your hearing a clicking sound like the motor running but nothing happening its the 3 little cylinder shaped cogs that turn the gear that meshes with the regulator they are made of plastic, and get brittle with age and disintegrate they are available in a kit to replace, but a 1/4 inch nut will work just as well. if you try and do the repair yourself, be aware that the regulator is spring loaded and when the motor is removed it will be under pressure. i always used a pair of vise grips to kinda hold it in place good luck

  • It sounds like the window regulator (raising and lowering mechanism) is gone. Some Fords use a cable and pulley system (Crown Vics, Grand Marquis, and Town Cars) and some may use a plastic tape type of system. Either way, that is probably your problem. You will have to get that part from a dealer, unless you are willing to get a worn out one from a salvage yard.

  • it could be that switch that works that window.
