Uv lights for bearded dragon?

  • I just bought a bearded dragon and i also bought a florescent lamp that's an "ESU Slimline 7%UVB" and it's 15W. I also have another lamp that we used to have for our turtles, and that florescent lamp is an "All-Glass Aquarium Pre-heat" and that one is also a 15w and it gives off a purpleish color. To be honest I'm not sure whether any of these two lights are good. Can anyone tell me which of the both I need. and if neither of them are good, can you tell me which one I do need. also, if i need to buy another UVB florescent light i will have to wait till my next check to buy it. so which do i use meanwhile? Please help, I want my beardie to be as healthy as possible

  • No, the ESU Slimline 7% UVB is no good. The fixture is fine, but the bulb is not. Use this bulb until you can buy a Repti-Sun 10.0 (10%) UVB tube but get it out ASAP.

I'm very glad to see that you're housing him on paper towels. There are absolutely no risks of impaction. Even though you didn't set up your enclosure first, at least you're trying to do things right.

This is what I use for my 3 year old: ESU Slimline Fixture with a Repti-Sun 10.0 UVB tube along with a 150w Basking Bulb for heat and basking. The temps on the basking end fluctuate between 95-104. The cooler end stays around 80-85.

Along with getting the new UVB light, be sure to pick up 2 thermometers. Not the cheap stick on ones either, they can be up to 20F off. Get yourself a good digital thermometer with a probe for the basking end and set the probe directly under the basking light. The temps there should stay around 95-105. and the cool end 80-90.

How old is your Bearded Dragon? A 20 gallon is way too small for an adult. If it's a baby under 10 inches the 20gal is fine... for now. You'll need to pick up a 40 gallon breeder tank or larger in the next month or so. An adult can't be kept in a 20 gallon.

If you are curious about anything else, feel free to contact me. I'm willing to help as much as I can.

  • I use two different bulbs in my bearded dragons tank. However they are not fluorescent but compact bulbs. I use repti glo 10.0 and repti glo 2.0.

The 10.0 bulb has a high UV output, both UVB and UVA.

The 2.0 bulb is a full spectrum terrarium bulb which helps stimulate appetite and activity.

I highly recommend the compact bulbs over the tube, but that is just my personal choice.

    best of luck.

  • No, not suitable at all.

To be honest, if you wanted what was best for your beardie you should have done all this BEFORE you bought him -_-

You need a reptile intended UVB tube - i think that the Arcadia D3 12.0 UVB is by far the best available, the least UV you want is 10.0 and a reflector will make a world of difference too.

You will need a proper controller to plug the tube into also - i think it is a 40W system.

The tube need to cover the length of the enclosure.

For heat, a household spot bulb in an appropriate wattage to get the correct temps will be fine but it needs a habistat too.

Also - it should NOT be housed in a tank, they are for fish. It needs to be a wooden enclosure with a glass front.

I don't know what 20gal is, but you need a 4 foot by 2 foot enclosure for an adult so you might as well get one of them asap and then you won't need to buy a new UVB and everything.

  • Unfortunately, the USU Slimline 7% UVB isn't a very good UVB bulb at all, nor is the other one. What you want is a fluorescent Reptisun 10.0, a fluorescent Arcadia D3 + 12%, a fluorescent Reptisun 5.0, or a Reptiglo 8.0. (Those are from greatest to least UVB output, by the way, so the Reptisun 10.0 would be the best.) I would strongly recommend against getting the compacts for two reasons. The first is that the majority of them have been linked to eye problems in Bearded Dragons. The second is that they stop putting out UVB after a month or two, as opposed to 6 months with the fluorescents.
Here is a website where you can get the lights: http://www.petmountain.com/product/fluor... (I have it linked to the Reptisun 10.0, but there are other lights available on there).
